Common Eye Issues

Understanding Common Eye Conditions

  • Amblyopia - Amblyopia (often called “lazy eye”) occurs when the vision in one eye doesn’t develop properly during childhood because the brain learns to rely on the stronger eye. Early detection and treatment—such as corrective lenses, patching, or eye drops—can often improve vision, especially if started young. More information here
  • Astigmatism - Astigmatism is a common condition where the eye’s surface is irregularly shaped, causing blurred or distorted vision. It can usually be corrected with glasses, contact lenses, or surgery. More information here
  • Cataracts - A cataract is a clouding of the eye’s natural lens, leading to blurry vision, faded colors, and glare. Cataracts are common with aging and can be treated effectively with surgery. More information here
  • Diabetic Retinopathy- Diabetic retinopathy is a complication of diabetes that affects the blood vessels in the retina, potentially leading to vision loss. Early stages may have no symptoms, so regular eye exams are crucial. More information here

Common Eye Problems

  • Floaters - Floaters are small specks or threads that drift across your field of vision, often caused by changes in the vitreous gel inside the eye. While usually harmless, a sudden increase in floaters may signal a more serious condition. More information here
  • Glaucoma - Glaucoma is a disease that damages your eye’s optic nerve. It usually happens when fluid builds up in the front part of your eye. More information here
  • Hemifacial spasm - Hemifacial spasm causes involuntary muscle contractions on one side of the face, often beginning around the eye. It can be treated with botulinum toxin injections or, in some cases, surgery. More information here
  • Hyperopia - Hyperopia, or farsightedness, is a common vision condition where distant objects are seen more clearly than those up close. It can be corrected with glasses, contact lenses, or refractive surgery. More information here
  • Macular Degeneration - Macular degeneration is an age-related disease that affects the central part of the retina, leading to blurry or distorted central vision. It’s a leading cause of vision loss in older adults. More information here
  • Myopia - Myopia, or nearsightedness, is a common condition where close objects are clear but distant ones appear blurry. It can be corrected with glasses, contact lenses, or refractive surgery. More information here
  • Presbyopia - Presbyopia is an age-related condition that makes it harder to see things up close, such as reading small print. It typically begins in your 40s and is corrected with reading glasses or multifocal lenses. More information here
  • Pterygium - Pterygium is a benign growth of tissue on the white part of the eye that can extend onto the cornea. It’s often linked to sun exposure and may require surgery if it affects vision. More information here
  • Strabismus - Strabismus is a condition where the eyes do not align properly, causing one or both eyes to turn in, out, up, or down. It can lead to vision problems and is often treated with glasses, therapy, or surgery. More information here
  • Tearing or watery eyes -Excessive tearing can be caused by irritation, blocked tear ducts, or issues with tear drainage. While often temporary, persistent symptoms may require treatment by an eye care professional. More information here
